Are you getting the right glass grinder features for your needs?
Before you start looking for stained glass grinders, it is worth your while to think about what your needs are, now and for the future. Remember too, that the whole point of buying a glass grinder is that it will dramatically improve your speed and quality, so you may find that you will be a lot more productive even if you don’t increase the amount of time your spend on your craft.
The most important indicators of quality are RPM and Torque – the higher the better for both. RPM is a measure of how fast the bit turns, while torque measure the resistance to the glass surface. Occasional users may be satisfied with a torque below 20, but if plan on being a heavy user, look for torque in the 30-45 range. RPM will range from 2850 to 3600, and larger projects will probably require higher RPM as they will remove glass faster.
If you plan on working on large pieces, then be sure to find a glass grinder with the larger work surface available. For people who will do both large pieces and smaller, detail work, look for grinders with a second worksurface, often on a second level.
The more expensive machines will also have additional features that may be of value to you, such as grids that flip over, foot pedals, and add-ons, such as bevel conversion. The more you plan on growing your craft, the more helpful these add-ons will be.
